This 18-hole, Gary Player designed, Championship golf course is one of the best-known and most spectacular in South Africa. It is situated on the foothills of the Helderberg and Hottentot Hollands mountains in Somerset West just 48km from the Western Cape. Classic vineyards with sublime beaches surround the course.
Some of the features of the Erinvale course are the sod layering in the bunker faces, wide gently undulating Kikuyu fairways and Penn Cross greens. There is water on six of the 18 holes and the rough is well kept and playable. This par 72 course is 6294 meters long.
The first nine holes is mostly flatland whilst the back nine traverses the slopes of the majestic Helderberg Mountain. It consists of a challenging selection of par 4 holes with a number of the bunkers having steps leading into them.
The greens are huge and well shaped allowing for a wide variety of pin placements.
A special feature of Erinvale is its different colored pin flags indicating the pin placement for the day. Blue indicates the pin is at the back of the green, while white indicates the middle and red the front.
Facilities: Open all year; Thursdays and on weekends for members only; in December und January only for guests of the Erinvale Hotel.
Gary Player has this to say about the course: "As you play through the back nine holes, you climb dramatically up the mountain to enjoy the spectacular view. The sea in the distance and the many wineries for which the Cape is famous are further attractions ... I think this will be one of the best golf courses in South Africa ."
